CHARLOTTE JIU-JITSU ACADEMY

FAQ

What should I wear to my first class?

You should arrive 10-15 minutes early to meet the instructor, sign a waiver, and become familiar with our facility.  If you have a Gi of your own, please bring it.  We have loanable Gi’s available, as well as Gi’s available for purchase.

It is best to wear clothing that allows you to exercise comfortably to the No-Gi class.  You will eventually need a rashguard and board shorts without zippers or pockets.

Flip flops, sandals, and slippers are all highly recommended.  You will need to take your shoes off each time you are on a mat and put them back on when you get off.

We highly recommend that you bring a water bottle.  You can also refill your water bottles at our water bottle station.

Can i try a class before signing up?

We’d love to have you try us out.  We suggest you take some classes and see how you like our instruction, training partners, the gym culture, and the facility before committing to anything.

i don’t own a gi or belt will i need to buy one to try out the class?

It is not necessary to have a gi or belt to try out the classes.  We have loanable gi’s available for you to use during class.

i have a gi but it has a different gym’s patch on it.

We don’t do Jiu-Jitsu politics.  Wear whatever clean gi you have.  At CJJA, any color gi, gi brand, or gym affiliation is acceptable. So come on over and train with us!

What’s the basic etiquette while at cjja?

Shoes are never allowed on the mat. However, shoes are required to be on while off the mat.

The Gis must be cleaned and washed before class. In case of multiple classes in a day, a clean gi must be worn for each session! The same goes for no-gi as well.

Please keep your fingernails & toenails trimmed as well as good personal hygiene.

Respect your training partners. Respect your instructors.

In the Gi, we follow the IBJJF ruleset.  No-gi, we follow the ADCC rule set minus slamming.

The biggest lie in Jiu-Jitsu.  “Hey, let’s flow roll”  it’s a trap.  Protect yourself at all times.

I’m going to be visiting charlotte. Can I train at Charlotte Jiu-Jitsu Academy?

Absolutely, come on in!  We have visitors drop in all the time.

is there an age limit for cjja classes & do you have kids classes?

We have members who range from 18 to 60 years old.  Unfortunately, we do not currently have kid’s classes but were working on it.
