Beginner BJJ

Start Jiu-Jitsu in Charlotte.

Never trained Jiu-Jitsu before? That is who this is for. Here is what to wear, where to start, and what your first class actually looks like.

You do not need experience.

Most people who walk through our door have never trained Jiu-Jitsu. Fundamentals classes are built for day one: learn the positions, ask every question, and get comfortable with how it feels.

Bring the basics

No special gear for day one.

Wear a t-shirt and shorts or leggings, nothing with zippers or pockets. Bring water and flip flops for when you step off the mat. Trying Gi Fundamentals, we will loan you a gi, you do not have to buy one first.

First class

What a beginner class feels like.

01

Show up ten minutes early

Walk in, say hi, get settled. You train barefoot, so bring flip flops or slides for when you step off the mat.

02

Wear simple training clothes

A t-shirt and shorts or leggings. Nothing with zippers, pockets, or jewelry. That is the whole uniform on day one.

03

Warm up, then learn technique

Class warms up with technique and concepts, then moves into hands on drilling with a partner. Coaches and students help walk you through everything.

04

Go at your own pace

Live rounds are part of class. On day one you can jump in, watch from the side and ask questions. You decide your comfort level.

Class types

Gi, No-Gi, and wrestling all connect.

Gi Fundamentals

The traditional jacket (Gi) and pants add cloth grips: collars, sleeves, lapels and belt. Fundamentals teach the core positions and submissions that carry across the whole art.

No-Gi Fundamentals

No jacket (Gi), no cloth to grab, just a t-shirt and shorts. You control the body instead, with underhooks, wrist and elbow control, and controlling the head. Faster, and closer to what you see in MMA. Without the striking.

Wrestling For Jiu-Jitsu

Standing takedowns, handfighting, wrestling up, pinning and many other things that will support your No-Gi journey.
