About
John Piper built Charlotte Jiu-Jitsu Academy into one of the most competitive sport Jiu-Jitsu programs in the Southeast, and he did it while still competing at the highest level himself.
In 2013, John won the IBJJF Masters World Championship at brown belt in the Gi. He then spent a decade pursuing the same title at black belt in No-Gi, taking silver at the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship four times (2015, 2019, 2023, 2024) before winning gold in 2025 as a Master 4 black belt. Four silvers and a decade of work to get back to the top of the podium. Most people would have stopped. He kept showing up.
That stubbornness shows up in how he runs CJJA. The academy's competition team includes IBJJF World Champions, Pan Champions, and medalists at every belt level from white to black. The coaching staff he's assembled reads like an IBJJF highlight reel: a 15-time World Champion, a 4-time NCAA All-American, and multiple World Masters medalists, all under one roof. Over 145 five-star reviews from the Charlotte community, and a program built on the idea that sport Jiu-Jitsu done right makes everyone on the mat better, competitors and hobbyists alike.
John teaches Gi and No-Gi Fundamentals and Advanced classes. Whether you're preparing for your first tournament or sharpening your game for Worlds, his coaching is rooted in what a decade of competing at the highest level taught him: the details matter, crucifix doesn't work, and there are no shortcuts.
