CHARLOTTE JIU-JITSU ACADEMY

Black belt 2021

May 15th, 2021, Patrick Hassing received his Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu.  Patrick has been a vital part of Charlotte Jiu-Jitu Academy since the start.

About patrick

aka hot pat

Patrick’s path to the black belt has been unique, with twists and turns along the way.  As a purple belt, Patrick visited Brazil to live, train, and compete for approx. 6 months.  While there, he was able to train and learn from many legends of the art.  Patrick has gone back to Brazil since the purple belt visit and continues to travel and share his Jiu-Jitsu all over the world.

At Charlotte Jiu-Jitsu Academy, Patrick is my right-hand instructor.  A traditional Jiu-Jitsu approach is part of Patrick’s teaching and class dynamics, which helps to keep CJJA balanced and grounded.  Patrick’s love of the Gi manifests in every class he teaches and every training session.  Even if Patrick does not love No-Gi grappling, his style and knowledge base lends to being well suited in both.  Patrick’s precision and competitive drive helped fuel him in numerous Jiu-Jitsu tournaments, and he shares that knowledge with everyone at the academy.

Here’s a shortlist of interesting/fun facts about our new black belt you may not be aware of.

Patrick is a successful engineer.

His favorite animals are snakes, which makes sense, considering his love of chokes.

If you’re looking for Patrick and he’s not on the mats or lifting weights, he’s probably reading.  He is currently studying Dostoevsky and Solzhenitsyn.

Snowboarding and travel are also high on the list for Patrick.

Okay, here’s one of my favorite.  Patrick has a nickname “Hot Patrick or Hot Pat” there’s a love/hate relationship with this as any proper nickname should have.

Next time you see Patrick, ask him about his “Thunder” shorts.  You will see him blush, then smile, and if he’s in the storytelling mood, you may get the answer.

Patrick, you’re a fantastic instructor and jiu-jitsu practitioner as well as a dear friend to me.  Charlotte Jiu-Jitsu Academy wouldn’t be the same without you, Patrick.

Congratulations, Patrick; I’m so proud of you!  I look forward to many more of our rolls to the death, or as you call it, “Hey coach, wanna flow roll”.

It has been my privilege and honor to be part of your Jiu-Jitsu.
